Oh what a show

Oh what a show

It wouldn’t be Orbost Show weekend without kilometres of cars lined up along the Princes Highway from the Newmerella Recreation Reserve and despite the horse events being cancelled for the weekend and the sweltering weather conditions, locals and visitors alike made sure Monday’s event was well supported.
Rotary Club of Orbost members were enlisted to man the gate and according to Orbost Agricultural Society president Jason Griebenow “numbers were still really good which is great considering we weren’t able to cover the entry fee this year after several years of receiving a grant to cover it”.
The scorching weather forecast for the Labour Day weekend meant last Thursday a call was made by the Orbost Pony Club, following advice given by veterinarians and Pony Club Australia officials, that the horse trials and gymkhana would not be ran as the forecast temperature and humidity would be dangerous for horses, competitors and volunteers. The events will occur at a later date.
Temperatures soared into the mid 30s on Sunday meaning that volunteers setting up were sweltering in the pavilion as carloads of entries rolled in. Volunteers did not pull up stumps until well after 10pm.

IMAGE: The Orbost Show is a staple of the Labour Day long weekend and this year’s event attracted another strong crowd, despite the scorching weather. There was something on offer for people of all ages, but as always the biggest pumpkin was a popular sight, Roxy Marshall pictured sitting atop Billie Johnstone’s winning pumpkin in the pavilion.
