The future of Orbost

"We're a long way from everywhere, but soon, everything will be a long way from here - that's whats possible for this town."
These were the words of Tim Cotter, the leader of the Future of Orbost and District Project at the inaugural Orbost and District Innovation Networking (ODIN) event at the Marlo Hotel last Wednesday night.
Community members, business owners and council workers were among those who attended the event, with more than 100 people filling up the hotel to discuss upcoming projects in the Orbost district.
Mr Cotter provided an update on the five innovation proposals which range from a national seeds institute in Orbost to future forest management and use.
Towards the end of the evening, six ideas were proposed and discussed, including: developing the Orbost Airport into a commercial airport and export hub; developing bioenergy opportunities for the district; an events centre at the Newmerella Recreation Reserve; expanding the childhood education and childcare facility; future housing and holiday accomodation; and providing more retiree opportunities.
