Firefighters were finally able to bring a bushfire burning north of Cann River, which started on private property on August 11 and escaped into the Cape Conran Coastal Park, under control late Saturday afternoon.

Following control work on the Cape Conran bushfire, most of Cape Conran Coastal Park and State Forest to the East of Cabbage Tree-Conran Road has now reopened with access to day visitor areas and camping at both Cape Conran and Pearl Point restored over the last few days.

Forest Fire Management Victoria’s James Pardew said efforts are currently being focused on blacking out any hotspots, while planning is underway to rehabilitate the land where temporary fire fighting tracks were put in.

“Department of Environment Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) and Parks Victoria are encouraging everyone to come back and visit the Cape Conran region, just keep an eye out for some extra fire vehicle traffic in the area,” he said.

Mr Pardew also warned visitors to the area to steer clear of the following closed roads East Yeerung Road between Pearl Point Road and Old Coast Road, and Old Coast Road between the intersection of Gravel Road and Cabbage Tree-Conran Road.

At time of print there was no threat to communities, but nearby residents should plan for what they will do if the situation changes, stay informed and monitor local conditions by listening to local radio or monitoring the Vic Emergency website or app.
