Untapped potential

Untapped potential

Local pub owner, Tim Behan, is entering the race to join East Gippsland Shire Council.
Tim moved to Orbost five years ago and currently operates the Orbost Club Hotel. Originally from far northern New South Wales, he sees a lot of similarities in the two areas and believes East Gippsland has a huge untapped tourism potential.
Prior to moving to Orbost, Tim worked in broadcast commercial television and previously in information technology. As a result he has worked on five Olympic Games. He also spent 13 years in the Australian Army Reserve.
Tim says he understands the importance of a sustainable future
and believes a well-regulated timber industry is “absolutely necessary” for the continued survival of regional economies.
“Between drought, fires and now COVID-19 we need unconventional thinking to stimulate our economy,” Tim said.
“I would encourage council to take advantage of cheap money to borrow and invest in significant infrastructure projects including bioenergy and micro grid technology – this will reduce landfill waste, carbon emissions and the risk of blackouts.
“The regional centres need investment, not just Bairnsdale and Lakes Entrance. We need to use everything our region has to offer to our maximum advantage.
The completion of the Omeo Mountain Bike park will be a great opportunity as will the restoration of the Snowy River Rail Bridge.
“Together, these two projects could really make this region a must do for the cycling community.
“Lobbying of Parks Victoria to increase the facilities in our pristine natural environment will also help the tourism drawcard.
“Some things just shouldn’t be as difficult as they are. Where possible I will work to simplify those annoying little things. It’s what you might call an outbreak of commonsense.
“I’ll pass the pub test. I’d really appreciate your vote.”
