Farewell to new friends

Farewell to new friends

It was a fitting farewell to the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and Australian Defence Force personnel when the community gathered at Lochiel Park for a barbecue on Friday night.

In recent weeks the soldiers had been based in Orbost as part of Operation Bushfire Assist, clearing roads, cleaning up communities along the corridors of operation and community engagement, following the devastating bushfires.

During their stay the Fijian soldiers welcomed the community to mass in the park, treated locals to dance performers, joined in on conga lines, sung beautiful songs and played football with locals and Australian Defence Force members.

Friday’s festivities included a traditional Fijian farewell ceremony, called an itatau, and an Australian Indigenous Welcome to Country and cleansing.

Strong friendships were forged during the soldiers’ stay and there were tears from many as the locals said goodbye to their new friends.
