100th flower show is all ready to roll

It’s flower show week and all is ready for the big opening of the 100th St Andrew’s Uniting Church Flower Show this Friday, October 25.

At 11am, 281 school students from surrounding primary schools and the secondary college will provide the entertainment with the singing of Celebrate Good Times, Come On as well as other songs to entertain the crowds.

The Orbost Secondary College Band will also feature as they play Waltz of the Flowers.

Director of music at the secondary college, Sue Taylor, is coordinating the musical entertainment and has been visiting the various schools to help them learn the songs while many staff from the schools have also put in a great effort.

Heather Ewart, who is well known for her ABC television show, Back Roads, will officially open the show.

Born and bred in country Victoria, Heather is one of the ABC’s most experienced and skilled reporters and presenters. She has reported in bureaus in Canberra, London, Washington and Brussels.

Heather will also bring with her a camera crew so there is a chance this event may feature on television.

Following the opening, the doors to the halls will be open for flower show visitors to browse the entries. Look for bargains at the cake, crafts, souvenir, veggies, plant and book stalls, as well as enjoy the home made morning and afternoon teas and delicious lunches in Wesley Hall.

In addition this year there will be an historical display in the church tracing the 100 years of the flower show from the first competitive show in 1920 to present day. There will also be some cars from bygone days on display and there will be an array of plants in the church foyer.

At 3pm in the main hall on Friday there will be a re-dedication of two World War I plaques by RSL chaplain, Rev Bevil Lunsen. These commemorate James Cameron and Dr James Kerr.

Entries in the show can be made tomorrow from 5 to 7pm or on Friday from 7.30 to 8.45am. Check your garden and enter some cut flowers or be creative and do an arrangement. Schedules are available around town, at the Snowy River Mail office, Dickens, Bell’s or the library. There are sections for adults and students of all ages.

Times to visit the flower show are Friday, from 11am to 4pm, and Saturday, from 9.30am to 3pm. There is no entry fee for children/students. You are assured a beautiful display and a perfume to arouse your senses. Come and help celebrate this important occasion.
