The Victoria State Emergency Service (VICSES) Cann River Unit has been sharpening its Road Crash Rescue (RCR) skills in preparation for its volunteers’ skills to be put to the test when they undergo a Road Crash Rescue Capability Assessment due to occur later this month.
The Cann River volunteers, in conjunction with the Regional Readiness Team, have been working extremely hard to pass their three-yearly RCR accreditation.
The Road Crash Rescue training will allow the volunteers to be assessed and meet the criteria for the RCR capability to ensure the unit remains as a Road Rescue Unit for its community.
VICSES is Victoria’s response agency for flood, storm, earthquake and tsunami emergency, as well as operating the largest road rescue network in Victoria.
VICSES volunteers also assist police, fire brigades and other agencies when required. Preparation is vital and therefore a frequent and varied training calendar is also vital to tackle such a wide range of responsibilities.
Cann River Unit Controller, Andrew Filmer, said this would allow the unit to continue its work safeguarding the community.
“Our members give their time freely to help their community in times of need,” he said.
“It’s important they have the right tools and skills for the job.
“We often respond to incidents on short notice at odd hours, so it’s important we are ready to go at all times - and we are.”
The unit thanks Cann River Towing for donating wrecks for its volunteers to train on, ensuring they maintain skills to the highest standard for support to their community in times of need.
Cann River SES meets on the second Wednesday of each month to train at its headquarters at 29 Monaro Highway, Cann River. VICSES volunteers receive extensive training that is regularly updated to ensure they’re always ready to go when an emergency strikes in the community.
