Cann Valley appreciation

The award-winning Cann River Volunteer Appreciation Day saw another wonderful celebration of the Cann Valley district’s volunteers on Saturday, held during National Volunteer Appreciation Week.

The Cann River Community Centre’s inaugural volunteer appreciation day last year saw the centre and the supportive Cann River community receive East Gippsland Shire Council’s Community Event of the Year in this year’s Australia Day Awards, and the fun continued with its second annual event.

The community centre hosted a barbeque lunch for all 27 of their volunteers and invited the rest of the community volunteer organisations to attend.

Around 70 volunteers attended the day with representatives from the Cann River SES, CFA, Ambulance Victoria, Landcare and the Cann Valley Bush Nursing Centre.

The sun turned it on for everybody with a beautiful day in the park and squeals of delight from the children as they made full use of the jumping castle.

Speakers at the gathering thanked the district for its massive volunteer presence that helps provide the town services, especially now that a lot of paid work has left the area.

A huge thank you was given to the East Gippsland Shire Council for its Drought Relief Event funding and the CFA for its donation for lunch.

Many chipped in cooking the barbecue and most organisations had a stall to promote their work.

It was a fun day for everybody.

PICTURED: Among the around 70 volunteers acknowledged on the day were sausage brigade ‘banger burners’ Renae and Graeme Jeffers, Raymond Austen and Max Kalz.
