Mouthwatering win for Orbost butcher

Mouthwatering win for Orbost butcher

Having competed in the Melbourne competitions for Meatstock on March 23 and 24, Orbost butcher, Brett Morrison, says it was a good practice run for the Meatstock Sydney festival, held on May 4 and 5, where the Badassbbq Competition BBQ Team, made up of himself and four chefs, this time took home a hoard of accolades.

A familiar face around the area, Brett operates Morrison’s Meat Shops in Orbost and Lakes Entrance. He joined team Badassbbq, along with Sydney chefs, Mitch Davis, Kymbo Knox and Michael Willcocks, to lend his expertise in all things meat.

The 2019 music and barbecue festivals of Meatstock kicked off in Auckland in February, though Brett didn’t join the boys for that one.

Badassbbq had fun in Melbourne in March, but earlier this month they had plenty to be happy about at the Sydney festival when the burger they presented as part of the Steak Cookoff Association’s ‘King of the Que’ competition saw them take out first place. They followed this up with a third for their chicken wings, eighth in the hotdogs and 13th in steak.

The Badassbbq team handed in five categories in the Australasian BBQ Alliance competitions on the Sunday – chicken, lamb, brisket, pork and pork ribs – and received a call out for top 10 in pork.

The annual meat and music festival accommodates the best barbecue teams from around Australia and the world. Fifty-five teams from all around Australia, and two from Brazil, battled it out for meat supremacy in Sydney in fierce competition.

On the back of the success, Brett says being in the major competition showed him how far people will go to win trophies in a competition environment.

“It was a great experience to compete and I really enjoyed it,” he explained.

“However, in saying that, the fundamentals are the same at home.”

His tip for perfect barbecued meat for family and friends?

“Good quality product and patience when cooking a barbecue!”
