Show success

The annual Orbost Show returned to the Newmerella Recreation Reserve over the Labour Day long weekend and according to show president, Paul Lavell, it was a “huge success”.

The 2019 Orbost Show marks 110 years of the annual event, and as it always has been, was brought about again by a dedicated group of local volunteers, who Paul said did a fantastic job.

“I would like to first of all thank the sponsors of the town who supported the event over the three days,” he said.

“I would also like to thank the public and the visitors who attended to make the day a success.”

The weekend was an activity-filled one with Orbost Pony Club running horse trials on Saturday and gymkhana on Sunday in the lead up to the show on Monday.

“The competitors for the horse events were up this year, but with the fires at the moment we could have had a few more,” he said.

“It was fairly busy every time I went and had a look.

“On Monday it was a very good day and I think the weather was around 27 degrees.

“We had good numbers over the three days and I spoke to the gate keepers and they were surprised with how many people went through the gate.

“It was a credit to the visitors and it wasn’t just people from the region who came, they came from everywhere.”

Compared to last year, Paul says the numbers were similar.

“I think it was about average compared to last year’s event,” he said.

“All the trade vans were happy with the day.”
